Researchers in this study evaluated the influence of center-level factors on the rate of living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) among African Americans as compared to non-African American counterparts. Hierarchical multivariate logistic regression models were used to derive center-specific estimates through a quantification of patient-level factors, the association of center-level characteristics and degree of racial disparity in LDKT. Racial parity was not seen at any of the 275 transplant centers in the United States. Even at centers with the least racial disparity, African Americans had 35% lower odds of receiving LDKT. The authors concluded that there is opportunity to learn and gain insight from those centres with less disparity.
