The effect of smoking on outcomes post-transplant has not been well-explored. In this retrospective single-center study of almost 1000 patients, recipients who had ever smoked were not only at a higher risk of death or graft loss, but also of acute rejection and poor graft function. This suggests that smoking cessation should be encouraged for patients both pre- and post-transplant.
