The authors sought to study factors that influence work status over the long term after heart transplantation at 4 US transplant centres. They utilized a range of instruments to ascertain clinical, health status, and demographic factors that predicted those who work and did not work at 5 and 10 years post-transplant. Their sample was predominately male and Caucasian, with a mean age of 53.8 years.  Of note, those who worked had less overall physical and psychosocial disability, and significantly less depression than non-workers. This data is a first step towards helping clinicians understand return to work issues but further research is needed to understand motivational and other cognitive factors that influence the return to work process for transplant recipients.
