Utilization of organs from donation after cardiac death (DCD) donors has increased over the past several years, with a significant impact on the numbers of transplants performed, particularly in liver and kidney transplantation.  Lung transplantation is on the rise as well, however DCD cardiac transplantation to date has not been validated as a viable option.  Preclinical work is accumulating, suggested that DCD hearts might be suitable for transplantation, although several important issues have yet to be resolved.
