Recurrence of HCV post liver transplantation is universal, and clinically significant recurrence can have a major impact on both patient and graft survival. Prediction of patients that will go on to significant recurrence allow for both close follow up and consideration for anti-viral therapy. The present study shows that steatosis in the early post liver transplant period is a marker of high risk of fibrosis progression. The ability to predict which patients will go on to develop fibrosis will be a valuable tool in determining who would benefit from therapy.
