The mortality on the waiting list for patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) remains high despite advances in the medical therapies for this disease.  Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) devices have been used to bridge IPAH patients to transplant, including the pumpless Novalung lung assist device.  This retrospective study demonstrates a reduction in waiting list mortality in PAH by implementing Novalung as a bridge to lung transplantation, although longer intensive care admissions were also noted in patients bridged with this therapy.
