RESITRA/REIPI is a Spanish Network for Research in Transplantation that has previously conducted robust studies of post-transplant infections.  In this prospective analysis, the authors compared infectious complications between 1302 kidney transplant patients that were HCV positive (n=105) vs. HCV negative.  There was no difference in the overall incidence of infections; however, HCV positive patients had significantly more bloodstream infections and upper urinary tract infections.  In addition, there was a higher rate of acute rejection and retransplantation in the HCV positive group.  This study provides insight into transplantation of HCV positive kidney transplant patients and highlights that these patients have an increased risk of infectious complications.
