Herpesvirus reactivations are common in immunosuppressed patients and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality.  This prospective cohort study examined the incidence and clinical impact of HSV and CMV detection in the respiratory tracts of lung transplantation recipients during their post-transplant hospital stay – a period when immunosuppression is highest and patients may be more susceptible to reactivations.  Patients had routine nasopharygeal swabs weekly following lung transplantation and bronchoalveolar lavage for viral studies based on clinical indicators of infection.  Despite all patients being treated with ganciclovir or valganciclovir prophylaxis during the post-operative course, CMV and HSV were frequently detected.
