There are limited studies examining either the incidence or risk factors for invasive fungal infections following pediatric heart transplant. This multi-institutional study from the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study group represents the largest analysis of invasive fungal infections following pediatric heart transplantation.  Invasive fungal infections accounted for a small percentage (6.8%) of the overall infections. These infections occurred early after transplant and were associated with a high mortality, similar to findings from the adult studies.  As both prior surgery and mechanical support were identified as risk factors for invasive fungal infections, this study raises the question as to whether certain high-risk groups may benefit from prophylaxis strategies.
