Natural killer (NK) cells use a complex recognition receptor array to identify target cells including inhibitory receptors that recognize HLA class I on healthy, normal cells. This study proposes a role for NK cells contributing to late allograft loss in HLA-A, -B, and –DR compatible kidney transplants. Combined with the recently identified association of NK cells and late antibody-mediated rejection, this study further promotes the idea that it is not only allospecific T and B cells that contribute to allograft loss but also NK cells, in renal transplantation and likely other vascularized transplants.
