The authors evaluated listing status awareness of hemodialysis patients, mostly African Americans, at a single centre in Philadelphia, PA, USA.  They found that 53% of their patients who were currently undergoing transplant evaluation (18/34) thought that they were already active on the waiting list.  This study highlights an important miscommunication within that particular transplant centre, and suggests that patients may overreport their transplant listing status (think that they are listed when they are still undergoing work-up). However, the small number of patients involved and the fact that this is a single centre study make it unclear whether the results are generalizable to the larger hemodialysis population.
