Long-term follow-up of lung and heart transplant recipients with pre-transplant malignancies

.   .

Pre-transplant malignancies are often considered relative or absolute contraindications to solid organ transplantation. This multi-center cohort study of heart and lung transplant recipients in Sweden, Norway, and Finland identified pre-transplant malignancy in 2.9% of recipients and analyzed the effect of pre-transplant cancer-free interval on the recurrence rate and long-term survival. The recurrence rate of cancer in recipients with cancer-free survival >5 years pre-transplant was only 6%, significantly lower than recipients with shorter cancer-free survival pre-transplant.
