Transmission of infection from donor to recipient is an an inherent risk in transplantation that can likely never be completely eliminated. This is true even in living donation, where transmission of hepatitis C and HIV has been reported. This paper reports the results of a conference on this topic. Most significant is the fact that the conference rejected a CDC recommendation that all living donors undergo NAT testing for HBV, HCV and HIV.
