Although originally considered an absolute contraindication to transplantation, the advent of HAART therapy has now made renal transplantation a viable option for selected HIV-positive patients with end-stage renal disease. This study reports the experience in a non-randomized trial of patients who were HIV-positive and received a renal transplant. Graft survival was lower than that for all transplant recipients, but was better than survival among patients older than 65, another high-risk group. There was a surprisingly high incidence of acute rejection among HIV-positive transplant recipients.
