This article uses the SRTR database to examine whether males and female candidates in the US receive deceased donor liver transplant at comparable rates.  They determine that women have markedly lower transplant rates than male candidates, that there are significant geographic differences in this disparity, and that the disparity has worsened in the MELD era.  There is no clear explanation for this disparity, though the authors suggest differences in access to care, donor /recipient size discrepancies as well as provider behaviours (both conscious and unconscious) likely play a role. This has ethical implications for providers wishing to offer equal access to all potential recipients and urges the transplant community to recognize and address the disparities that currently exist.
