As our knowledge in cardiovascular disease broadens, some differences between the sexes have become apparent. This retrospective analysis of the INTERMACS showed no significant sex differences in all-cause mortality, first infection, bleeding events, or device malfunction with either pulsatile- or continuous-flow LVADs. The authors found that women had an increased risk of first neurological event compared to men. Overall, this initial analysis does not suggest a significant disadvantage for women undergoing LVAD implantation in urgent/emergent situations.
