BK nephropathy is an important cause of graft failure. Similar to other viruses, it is possible that BK donor and recipient serology screening could be used to risk stratify patients. Sood et al. performed BK serology on 192 adult and 11 pediatric donor and recipient pairs. Recipients also underwent BK surveillance. They divided patients into […]

BK nephropathy is an important cause of graft loss and the majority of kidney transplant centers perform plasma BK virus screening. The purpose of screening is to detect virus early so that pre-emptive measures such as reduction of immunosuppression can be employed, thereby preventing progression to nephropathy. Knight et al. reviewed 369 kidney transplant recipients […]

In 2010, transmission of HIV occurred in New York State from a living donor transplant. Following this, the authors report on a survey that was done in 18 New York State transplant centers to determine practices in evaluation and screening for HIV. The centers performed living donor kidney and liver transplants. All centers conducted HIV […]

Screening for colon cancer is recommended in the general population because of demonstrated reductions in mortality. Whether this applies in immunosuppressed patients is unclear. In this study, renal transplant recipients had a high rate of colon cancer or advanced lesions. This study supports screening renal transplant recipients for colon cancer.
