The risk of bleeding complications including gastrointestinal bleeding are well documented in the VAD population. In this prospective study, acquired von Willebrand disease was confirmed to occur immediately after the implantation of both types of mechanical circulatory support and persisted up to 12 months. This phenomenon was also demonstrated in the partial support device. A lower von wildebrand ristocetin cofactor activity : antigen ratio was associated higher transfusion requirements. Fortunately, the acquired von Willebrand syndrome resolves after LVAD explantation.
